Burma to Myanmar
In the past thirty years Burma has undergone some critical changes. First and foremost the biggest one on an international scale being the formal renaming of the country from then Burma to its present name, Myanmar, in 1989. Then in addition to the renaming, the capital was changed from Rangoon (now Yangon) to Nay Pyi Taw in 2006.
This relocation was a move by the military junta to build a glamorous and well-monitored city at the expense of the peoples money. The project costing over three billion U.S dollars contains very little of the countries population, a couple movie theatres and shopping malls as well as one local market. More focus was paid to the presidential buildings where moats surround the castle looking like structures and the highway, which leads up to the establishment stretching twenty lanes in total.

The rule of the most recent junta stretches from 1962 to 2011 when finally after twenty years an election was held in an attempt to foresee an end to their terrible rule and in their place hopefully up bring a civilian democracy. Despite all this, based on less then favorable relations between the civilians and the military leaders, which will be further discussed throughout the website, the people as well as opposing parties claimed fraud on both sides and ruled the election as a scam.

Mr. Thein Sein

Was originally a key member of the military junta, being the main reason why the people fail to see the sincerity behind his leadership. Also the reason why the military controls more then a quarter of the seats in parliament. |
Inherit the Wind – “The Trial of the Century”
Inherit the Wind is an excellent play written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee.
“The accused was a slight, frightened man who had deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus. The chief gladiators were the two great legal giants of the century. Like two bull elephants locked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roared imprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to retrain themselves” (Lawrence, J., Lee, R. Inherit the Wind).

Inherit the Wind – Synopsis
Bert Cates, who’s been convicted for teaching Darwinism to his sophomore science, class is in Jail. Rachel Brown, daughter of Reverend Brown who is the spiritual leader of Hillsboro visits him. Rachel begs Cates to admit that he did wrong, but Cate refuses. Matthew Harrison Brady, three-time presidential candidate, fundamentalist, and leader of the crusade against evolution, has volunteered as prosecuting attorney. Bert Cates then sends a letter to Baltimore Herald to request on an attorney to defend him. Drummond is sent to defend Cates. Henry Drummond receives hate from the townspeople, also given the name ‘devil’.
First day in the courtroom involved selecting people for the jury who were not biased. After the day in the courtroom, Reverend Brown holds a prayer meeting, wishing a curse on Cates and anyone who defends or follows him, including his daughter Rachel.
The next day, the trial proceeds and the witnesses are called. Cates’ students and Rachel testify against Cates. Drummond witnesses are excused. Drummond then calls up Brady himself to the stand. Drummond then exposes that Brady does not interpret the bible literally and destroys the admiration he first received from the crowd. He turns around the view of the crow thus making Brady look bad. The trial is now in Drummond’s favor. The jury still finds Cates guilty, but is only fined one hundred dollars. Although Brady won the case, his victory was meaningless. The real victors are Drummond and Cates for opening the eyes of others, letting it be known that the right to think, speak, and believe in one’s own opinion should be allowed. Even when one is convicted, it should not stop one from standing up for what they believe in.
Brady then dies and Rachel and Cates leave the scene together, leaving behind the evolution textbook.
