Freedom of Education - The socially accepted right which should be bestowed on to anyone young or old to study what they choose with out the fear of repercussions from others.
Darwin's Theory Summarized
A species is a population of organisms that interbreeds and has fertile offspring.
Living organisms have descended with modifications from species that lived before them. Natural selection explains how this evolution has happened: — More organisms are produced than can survive because of limited resources. — Organisms struggle for the necessities of life; there is competition for resources. — Individuals within a population vary in their traits; some of these traits are heritable -- passed on to offspring. — Some variants are better adapted to survive and reproduce under local conditions than others. — Better-adapted individuals (the "fit enough") are more likely to survive and reproduce, thereby passing on copies of their genes to the next generation. — Species whose individuals are best adapted survive; others become extinct. |
- In the same manner the initial publishing and reading of Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, sent ripples throughout the world of literature and also made some people scared and some people angry. The introduction of Darwin's theory to this feeble minded community had almost the exact same effect.
"This one book has been the center of the whirlwind" - Drummond (Lawrence, Lee 129)
Freedom on Education in Inherit the Wind
- The struggle of the freedom of education in Inherit the Wind is shown when Bertrum Cates is automatically put on trial on trial because despite being a devoted christian, the Government as well as social pressures of the town have suppressed his ability to teach his students something that is proven to be true.
- Also the government sent one of their biggest heavyweights in the field of prosecution to ensure that no one else would be able to receive this new form of education because then the belief is that peoples minds will stray away from God.
- In a world that is technologically advancing everyday, the restriction of this essential form of education will slowly and slowly bring the community back. Building a bigger hole for which it needs to climb out of.
"What're yuh skeered of? You was a worm once!" - Howard (4).
"I wasn't neither!" - Melinda (4).
"You was so! When the whole world was covered with water, there was nuthin' but worms and blobs of jelly. And you and your whole family was worms!" - Howard (4).
"We was not!" - Melinda (4).
"Blobs of jelly, then" - Howard (4).
"Howard Blair, thats sinful talk!" - Melinda (4)
- An example of this would be when unfortunately, the minds of children are already in debate and the educated or enlightened mind if you will of Howard is already starting to be shut down by Melinda. Just as how the government refused Bertrum Cates's sophomore class the ability to become educated and advance with the times they are in.
- Though it is minor, the fact that Howard's grammar and slang is horrible, compared to men like E.K Hornbeck and Henry Drummond who come from advanced and technological cities. Educated men. Howard's education now, is what will shape him has a boy, and help shape the others after him. Sort of a similar case to what is said concerning transferring traits in Darwin's theory.
